Acre is a unit of area commonly used for measuring the area of land. The international symbol for acre is **ac**. It should not be confused with **hectare** which is also a unit of area.

It’s been used since **middle **or **medieval **ages and is still used in Commonwealth countries. For example Canada, the Cayman Islands, Ghana and India.
